Welcome to St John the Evangelist, East Dulwich.
St John's lies in South London on the borders of Dulwich and Peckham, just off East Dulwich Road at the top of Goose Green. St John's is part of the Dulwich Deanery within the Diocese of Southwark of the Church of England.
St John's was built in 1865 to serve an area undergoing rapid development from fields to streets, largely as a result of the coming of the railways. East Dulwich became an ideal suburb for commuters to central London. The church replaced a smaller East Dulwich Chapel, erected in 1826 in Lordship Lane. St John's is built in the Victorian Gothic style, with tower and spire. The architect was Charles Barry, nephew of a local landowner, founder of the former chapel.
The church was badly damaged by bombing in 1940 and was out of use until 1951 when it was rededicated by the Bishop of Southwark.
Large fund-rasing efforts by church members and the local community in recent years have resulted in the important extension to the church building, the Goose Green Centre for Church and Community, opened in 1996 and a new spire, completed in 2005.
